2009 Solar DecathlonThe University of Arizona’s solar house, known as the SEED [pod], came 18th of 20 in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon Washington, D.C. The house had to be disassembled, trucked to Washington, D.C. and then set up on the mall. The houses were judged in a number of areas, including architectural design, comfort, building technologies, net metering and market viability. The Solar Decathlon showcases design excellence in energy-efficient and solar energy-powered home design. The innovative design and engineering features showcased in the house are the result of a broad collaboration at the University of Arizona that involved the schools of architecture and engineering.
The house was built by a team of students and professionals at the University. In addition, the Pima County Workforce Investment Board provided skilled laborers, including plumbers, welders and carpenters who helped to complete the house in time for its departure for Washington, D.C.

The UA solar house was assembled for inspection in the parking lot behind the College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture before being shipped off to Washington, D.C.
